Advancements in additive manufacturing are spurring a paradigm shift in digital design and production that is impacting disciplines from industrial design to the art world. New technologies are making it possible to more rapidly and cost effectively produce prototypes, as well as make final quality pieces such as jewelry and objets d’art. Initially using mostly polyamide or nylon, 3D printers are now utilizing materials from clay to glass providing designers with far broader possibilities and creating new markets for direct-to-consumer sales.
Print/3D will show a wide range of 3D printed pieces from the fields of furniture, fashion, jewelry, medicine and product design. An on-site installation of a Makerbot printer will live print from scanned CAD files. Audiowear, Bespoke, EOS, LGM, .MGX by Materialise, Shapeways, and Studio Dror among others, have all supplied examples of works to explore in this fascinating exhibit. Print/3Dshows how technology, creativity and imagination combine to push the boundaries of 3D printing today.
Print/3D runs at Material ConneXion, 60 Madison Avenue, 2nd floor, New York, NY from February 28 to May 11, 2012. An opening reception will take place on Tuesday, February 28 from 6:00 – 8:00pm.
